About Larry Welker

Detroit native Larry Welker along with his good friend Glenn Frey, moved to California out of a lifelong love of guitar playing in the heydays of the sixties, where he met and worked with many renowned artists whose names have since become world famous. During this time he toured nationally with such famous artists as Charlie Musselwhite. The list of famous guitarists who have consulted Larry on their guitar sound over the years includes Eric Clapton, Glenn Frey, Jerry Garcia, J.D. Souther, Bob Seger, and many other guitarists who have ultimately become well known for their unique guitar sounds. Larry chuckles today when he hears a riff he taught Glenn soaring through an Eagles song.

He met and married his wife Kathleen during this time and in the mid-eighties the pair moved to New Hampshire where he opened up shop doing lutherie and antique furniture restoration, but Larry always kept playing and recording with local musicians in the home based midi studio he designed and built.

In 2004, when his historic barn burned down Larry turned calamity into opportunity when he rebuilt his shop and moved it to its current location in Claremont, NH. The combined attributes of being a lifelong musician, and the knowledge of how to build stringed instruments that produce the stringent tonal qualities that he requires, led him into producing the lines of archtop guitars that he hand builds today.

Larry Welker’s guitars, a.k.a eL Welker Guitars, are guitars and basses built by a musician for musicians. From planing the rough wood, to attaching the binding and final finishing, all of the work building eL Welker guitars is personally done by Larry.

It was only a few years ago when Larry developed the unique design for the prototype of his line of leather wrapped archtop guitars, He was impressed when he found that wrapping a laminated guitar in leather did not deaden the sound, but instead diminished the stray harmonics that many players find annoying, while creating a rich fabric of the tonal frequencies that so many people worldwide love in a guitar.

Larry welcomes all inquiries about his leather and non-leather archtop guitars. Feel free to call (603)-542-5014 10 AM to 4 PM EST, or send an email to elwelkerguitars@comcast.net , to get in touch with Larry about building your new guitar.
